The experience of my life – ICES

I’ve been in America for four months. This time has been amazing, with a lot of new experiences and things to learn. I can definitely state that the American life is really different from my life in Spain.

The most different thing and what I’m liking the most is the school. Besides the main classes, there are a lot of cool classes you can sign up for. My favorite period is «Student Council»: this is a class where we organize almost all the activities and events of the school. This class makes me involve a lot in the school and know more people. With the «Student Council» class, we went to a one day trip to Disneyland California and I had a lot of fun. I’m also taking «Dance and Choir», which are very fun.

Our school is a campus where besides the rooms to learn there is a parking lot for the student’s and teacher’s cars and also a lot of things related with the sports: football field with bleachers, track, soccer field, basketball courts, tennis courts, baseball field and softball field. Here, sports are very important and almost every sport it’s only for one season. On the fall season, I did «Cross Country». I could run some races in Varsity, which is the best division. I’m so glad I did this sport because I met almost all my friends there. They are so funny and we do a lot of fun actives together. On September, we went to a cross country meet in California and it was very fun and I had a really good time with my friends.

Now, on the winter season I’m doing «Flag Football», which is basically American Football but instead of tackle we pull flags that are tied in our waists. Also, I signed up for the Ski and Snowboard club, and we are planning to go on a trip in Utah soon.

One of the best experiences I’ve had was the Homecoming week. During those days, we had to go to the school dressed up everyday. There were some fun events, such the football game or the parade. The best thing was the dance. I was asked to go with one of my cross country’s friends and we went all together in a group with more friends. Actually, the point of it is not just the dance itself, it’s also the things that you plan to do before and after it, like go to take pictures before the dance or go to have dinner.

I’m living with my host family in Henderson, a city next to Las Vegas, Nevada. They are very nice and they always take care of me and help me whenever I need it. Living with them, I’m learning a lot of new things about the American culture and also a lot of things about themselves. It’s been such a great experience to spend holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas with them. But this year Christmas has been a little bit different for me because my host family is Jewish, so we did Christmas with my host mum’s family and Hanukkah with my host dad’s family, but I’m glad I had the chance to live this new holiday for me.

We do some nice activities together also they take me to some interesting places to know more about the zone, like for example to watch a show in one of the hotels in The Strip (the main street of Las Vegas), to the snow in the Mount Charleston, to the lightly cactus garden, to the zoo or to the movies.

My local coordinator sometimes organizes ICES meetings for the exchange students in the zone. We’ve gone to such fun places like the water park or the bowling center and it’s really nice because we have the chance to know people from all around the world that are living the same experience than you. She is a really nice person who helps me if I have any problem or question and she is always there for whatever I need.

I really think this is an opportunity that you can’t let go. This year is helping me to be more independent, mature and to make my owns decisions. I won’t forget all this amazing moments I’m having here, and I’m sure this experience will change my life to better. But right now I just want to enjoy every moment of this year, that, by the way, it’s going too fast!

«La experiencia de mi vida»

Mi nombre es Queralt y soy un estudiante de intercambio ICES de Barcelona, España.

Llevo cuatro meses en Estados Unidos. Estos meses han sido increíbles, con un montón de nuevas experiencias y cosas para aprender. Definitivamente puedo afirmar que la vida americana es realmente diferente a la Española.

Lo más diferente y lo que más me gusta es el colegio. Además de las clases principales, hay un montón de clases a las que te puedes apuntar. Mi favorita es «Student Council» una clase en la que organizamos casi todas las actividades y eventos de la escuela. Esta clase hace que me involucre más y conozca a más gente. Con la clase de «Student Council», fuimos a un viaje de un día a Disneyland California y me divertí mucho. También estoy asistiendo a «Dance and Choir», (danza y coro), que es muy divertido

Nuestro institituo está en un campus donde además de aulas hay aparcamiento para los coches de los alumnos y profesores, instalaciones deportivas: campo de fútbol con gradas, pista de atletismo, canchas de baloncesto, canchas de tenis, béisbol, campo de softbol. Aquí, los deportes son muy importantes y casi todos se practican a lo largo de una temporada. En la temporada de otoño, practiqué «Cross Country». Pude competir en varias carrreras en Varsity que fue lo más divertido. Estoy contenta de haber practicado este deporte porque fue donde conocí a casi todos mis amigos. Son muy divertidos y hacemos un montón de actividades juntos. En septiembre, fuimos a un encuento de «Cross Country» en California, lo pasamos muy bien.

Ahora, en la temporada de invierno estoy haciendo «Flag Football», que es básicamente fútbol americano en el que hay que tirar de las banderas que están atadas en nuestra cintura. Además, me inscribí en el club de esquí y snowboard, y estamos planeando ir en un viaje en Utah pronto.

Una de las mejores experiencias que he tenido fue la semana de «Homecoming». Durante esos días, tuvimos que ir arreglados al colegio todos los días. Hubo algunos eventos divertidos, como el partido de fútbol o el desfile. Lo mejor fue el baile. Me pidieron que fuera con uno de mis amigos de «Cross Country» y fuimos todos juntos en un grupo con más amigos. En realidad no solo consiste en el baile en si, si no también las cosas que hacer antes y después, como ir a hacernos fotos antes de la fiesta y salir a cenar después.

Vivo con mi familia anfitriona en Henderson, una ciudad cerca de Las Vegas, Nevada. Son muy agradables y cuidan de mí y me ayudan cuando lo necesito. Viviendo con ellos, estoy aprendiendo muchas cosas nuevas sobre la cultura americana y también muchas cosas sobre ellos. Ha sido una gran experiencia pasar vacaciones como Acción de Gracias o Navidad con ellos. Pero este año la Navidad ha sido un poco diferente para mí, porque mi familia anfitriona es judía, así que festejamos la Navidad con la familia de mi madre anfitriona y Hanukkah con la familia de mi padre anfitrión. Me alegro de haber tenido la oportunidad de vivir esta nueva fiesta para mi.

Hacemos agradables activiades  juntos, me han llevado a lugares interesantes para que conociese mejor la zona, como por ejemplo a un espectáculo a un hotel en «The Strip» (la calle principal de Las Vegas). También hemos ido a la nieve en el «Monte Charleston», al jardín del cactus, al zoológico y al cine.

Mi coordinadora local organiza reuniones para los estudiantes de intercambio de ICES de la zona. Hemos ido a lugares tan divertidos como el parque acuático o el centro de bolos. Es muy agradable porque tenemos la oportunidad de conocer gente de todo el mundo que vive la misma experiencia que tú.

Mi coordinadora local es una persona muy agradable que me ayuda si tengo cualquier problema o pregunta y ella siempre está allí para lo que necesite.

Realmente creo que esta es una oportunidad que no te puedes perder. Este año me está ayudando a ser más independiente, madura y tomar mis propias decisiones. No voy a olvidar todos estos momentos increíbles que estoy teniendo aquí, y estoy segura de que esta experiencia va a cambiar mi vida a mejor. Pero ahora mismo sólo quiero disfrutar de cada momento de este año, que, por cierto, va demasiado rápido!.
