La experiencia de Blanca como estudiante de intercambio en Carolina del Norte

Blanca, estudiante de intercambio de Valladolid, nos cuenta su gran experiencia de año escolar en Carolina del Norte.

«Hello, my name is Blanca, and I’m an exchange student from Valladolid, Spain. I have been living in North Carolina since September, and I’m having the best year of my life. I have a lot of good experiences here, but I want to start with the sports. In America, sports are a huge part of your social life. I have been running track since the beginning of the year and although I wasn’t interested in the beginning, I have grown to enjoy it immensely.

In addition, during the football season, Fridays were booked to hang out and cheer on my school’s team. One of those most memorable nights was the Power Puff, an American football game where Junior girls play against Senior girls. It was one of the best experiences I had in America because we practiced as a real team would and on Friday night, we played a game in front of the entire school. I didn’t know anything about American football or even Americans in general since it was the beginning of my year, but the game gave me the opportunity to meet some girls. Those girls I met ended up being the group of girls that I would end up knowing and love immensely. The fun part was that it was the first time in 15 years where the Juniors won against the Seniors. That win was super special and all of us girls had so much fun!

A couple days after the game, they invited me to Younglife, a Christian group that meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A lot of people from my school and other schools were there and they made me feel like I was at home. We did so many cool clubs and campaigns, such as senior nights, donut olympics…, but my favorite was ice cream olympics where we threw ice cream at each other and afterwards, they cleaned us with a fire truck hose!

Another important day for me was Prom, which is the final dance that all Juniors and Seniors are waiting for. Is a really important day in their lives and an American dream experience for us exchange students. I went to two Proms, one of my school and the other of a different High School. I definitely have some bias towards my school, but the one of my school exceeded my expectations so much more than the other. It was a beautiful day, full of emotion and happiness. I got ready with all my friends, we did our hair, nails, and took nice pictures before going to dinner with a big group of friends. After dinner we went to the dance, and it was amazing! Everyone was dancing, with a bunch of good food and “under Miami moonlight” decorations. It was a special day that I’m never going to forget!

This year gave me much more than learning a new language. I had the luck of traveling and I saw and learned things I will never be able to explain with words. I went to Washington D.C and Orlando with my host family, New York with another exchange student, Seaside Florida, and Wilmington with some friends. I tried new food, I saw different places, and I enjoyed the American culture.

About my Host family, I am so lucky to have them during my whole experience. I formed a new family, I have three more siblings now and I enjoyed every adventure with them. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and going with the boat on the lake are some of my best experiences with them.

But without any doubt the best part of my exchange year is my personal growth, the new family bond I have, and the amount of friends I will have forever.»

««Hola, me llamo Blanca y soy una estudiante de intercambio de Valladolid, España. Vivo en Carolina del Norte desde septiembre y estoy disfrutando del mejor año de mi vida. Estoy viviendo grandes experiencias aquí, pero quiero empezar con los deportes. En Estados Unidos, los deportes son una gran parte de la vida social de los estudiantes. He estado practicando atletismo desde el comienzo del año y, aunque no estaba interesada al principio, he llegado a disfrutarlo inmensamente.

Además, durante la temporada de fútbol americano, ​​los viernes estaban reservados para pasar el rato y animar al equipo de mi escuela. Una de las noches más memorables fue el Power Puff, un partido de fútbol americano donde las chicas Junior juegan contra las chicas Senior. Fue una de las mejores experiencias que tuve en Estados Unidos porque jugamos al fútbol como lo haría un equipo de verdad. El viernes por la noche jugamos un partido frente a toda la escuela. No sabía nada sobre fútbol americano ni sobre los estadounidenses en general, ya que era el comienzo de mi año, pero ese partido me dio la oportunidad de conocer a algunas chicas. Todas ellas terminaron siendo mis mejores amigas a las que quiero un montón. La parte divertida fue que era la primera vez en 15 años que los Juniors ganaban a los Seniors. ¡Esa victoria fue súper especial y todas las chicas nos divertimos mucho!

Un par de días después del partido, me invitaron a Younglife, un grupo cristiano que se reúne los martes y jueves. Había mucha gente de mi colegio y de otros colegios y me hicieron sentir como en casa. Hicimos tantos clubes y campañas geniales, como noches de seniors, olimpiadas de donas…, pero mi favorita fue la olimpiada de helados, donde nos tiramos helado unos a otros y luego ¡nos limpiaron con una manguera de camión de bomberos!

Otro día importante para mí fue el Prom, el baile final que todos los estudiantes Juniors y Seniors están esperando. Es un día muy valioso en sus vidas y una gran experiencia para los estudiantes de intercambio. Fui a dos Proms, al de mi colegio y al de otro. Obviamente, le tengo preferencia a mi colegio, y la verdad es que superó mis expectativas. Fue un día precioso, lleno de emoción y felicidad. Me arreglé con todos mis amigos, nos peinamos, nos hicimos las uñas y nos tomamos unas fotos preciosas antes de ir a cenar con un grupo de amigos. Después de la cena fuimos al baile, ¡y fue increíble! Todos bailaban, había un montón comida buenísima y la decoración era preciosa, el tema: «bajo la luz de la luna de Miami». ¡Fue un día especial que nunca voy a olvidar!

Este año he hecho más que aprender un nuevo idioma. He tenido la suerte de viajar, ver y aprender cosas que nunca podré explicar con palabras. Fui a Washington D.C. y Orlando con mi familia anfitriona, Nueva York con otro estudiante de intercambio, Seaside Florida y Wilmington con algunos amigos. He probado comida nueva, he visitado diferentes lugares y he disfrutado la cultura estadounidense.

Sobre mi familia anfitriona, he tenido mucha suerte de tenerlos durante toda mi experiencia. Formé una nueva familia, ahora tengo tres hermanos más y he disfrutado cada aventura con ellos. Navidad, Acción de Gracias, Halloween e ir con el barco en el lago son algunas de mis mejores experiencias con ellos.

Pero sin duda lo mejor de mi año de intercambio es mi crecimiento personal, el nuevo lazo familiar que tengo y la cantidad de amigos que tendré para siempre.””
